Treat of the Week: Emoji Stories!

Emojis are all over the πŸ“°!  A global translation firm in London πŸ’‚is seeking an "Emoji Translator" (yes, a paying job!), and in 2015 the Oxford Dictionary made πŸ˜‚ ("Face with Tears of Joy") the word of the year  πŸŽ‰.

Do your students ever wonder πŸ’why there isn't a Pikachu emoji?  It turns out that it's a long, complicated process to get new emojis included (and Pikachu is unlikely to make the cut!)

There are lots of great ways to incorporate emojis into your classroom:

Retell a story
Translate a song or story into a rebus story (or write your own!)

Create a new emoji using Assembly and πŸ“ a persuasive text about why it should be added to the standard emoji list

Write a story using emojis, then tell the story by recording your voice (in any language!)

Use the emoji writing prompt generator

iOS10 added a bunch of new emojis a couple weeks ago so be sure to update your πŸ“±! ✓
